The majority of these species are habituated in the Himalayan ranges. Acharya Charaka used astavargas in Chavanaprasa, which is an important formulation of Ayurveda.

Astavarga has been assigned various medicinal properties, including Jivaniya, Brimhriya, and Vayasthapana.
